Vietnamese New Year

Vietnamese New Year
Vietnamese New Year

Tet, in Vietnamese language, symbolizes the very first morning of the New Year in Vietnam and is popularly known as the Vietnamese New Year. Also known by the name of Nguyen-Dan, its celebrations lasts for about 7 days. The celebrations of the Vietnamese New Year involves a lot of excitement and enthusiasm and is it is regarded as one of the most popular festivals of the year among the Vietnam people. The happiness associated with Vietnamese New Year can be attributed to the fact that this particular festival brings along one of the most desired break in the agricultural year for the Vietnamese people.

As Vietnamese New Year celebrations fall between the period of crop harvesting and the sowing of the new crops, people get much time and opportunity to celebrate this festival of new hopes with much fervor. As far as the preparation for Vietnamese New Year goes, that starts days and weeks before the New Year's Day. People start cleaning and decorating their homes with a belief that by doing so they would be getting rid of bad fortune and bad memories, which were associated with the previous year.

People all over Vietnam buy new clothes as well as new shoes and try their best to pay off their debts and even try to resolve the differences among the family members and friends.

The New Year's Eve is celebrated with a special ceremony by the name of Le Tru Tich, at the midnight hour. The ceremony is initiated with firecrackers and gongs in order to bid goodbye to the previous year and welcome the New Year with loud happy noises. Just like the Chinese, the Vietnamese people are also very much particular about what they do on New Year's Day, as they believe that the events and actions performed on Vietnamese New Year's Day determines a person's luck and fortune for the rest of the year to come. Thus they try to be in touch only with those things, which represent good fortune. People who are in mourning are avoided on this particular day, as they are associated with death. Children are told not fight or even cry on Vietnamese New Year's Day and the homes are adorned with Hoa Mai, which is a yellow blossom that represents the season of spring and happiness.

New Year gifts are exchanged among the family members and friends and homage is paid to the Kitchen God. The custom associated with the kitchen God tao is also observed in every Vietnamese household for a week before the Vietnamese New Year. Vietnamese people are of the belief that there exist three gods for them, who are duly represented by the three legs of the cooking equipment as used in the kitchen and thus kitchen in the house is the perfect place for these Gods. The middle God is a woman, while the other two are her husbands.

In the ancient times, it was once a custom to provide a carp to the Gods on which they can travel. The carp basically symbolizes the second last stage of the process through which the animals were slowly and gradually transformed into dragons. People used to buy these carp from the market. They used to place it in a bucket of water and used to place the bucket at the altar of the house and in due time it was set free. The people also make it a point to visit local temples on this day in order to pray for God's blessings for prosperity and good health. The Vietnamese families are known to plant a New Year's tree in front of their homes by the name of Cay Neu at the time of Vietnamese New Year. A bamboo pole is used for this purpose. People remove all the leaves from the tree so that it can be wrapped or ornamented with good luck red colored paper. According to famous legends in the Vietnamese culture, the red color scares off evil spirits. The Cay Neu is taken down on the seventh and the last day of Tet. This is the last ritual, which brings an end to the New Year celebrations.

The Vietnamese New Year cuisine includes a special rice pudding, which needs to be prepared beforehand. The rice pudding is given the name of banh chung or banh tet. The main ingredients of this pudding are mung beans and pork. Some other famous New Year foods are preserved sweets, beef, chicken, fish, oranges, coconuts, grapefruits and other seasonal fruits, especially watermelon. Watermelon holds much importance, as its flesh is red in color and hence the melon is considered to be lucky. The seeds of the watermelon are often dyed red also and served as delicacies along with other food items. The middle of the day observes an offering on the altar of the household for the ancestor's of the family by the family members. The offerings are accompanied with burning of incense at the altar. The Vietnamese people are of the belief that the first person to go through the door on the Vietnamese New Year will replicate the family's future luck and wealth.

The first day of the Vietnamese New Year is reserved for visits to all the closest friends, teachers and parents, while on the second day people visit their in-laws and other acquaintances who are not as close. The third day is observed as the day of visiting the family of the teacher and more distant relatives. The spirits return to heaven on the fourth day of the Vietnamese New Year and business in the Vietnamese household returns to normal. People also make visits to the local temple on this particular day in order to bring back the flowers or greenery as a form of gift from the celestial spirits.

New Year Poem

New Year Poem
New Year Poem

New Year Poem is as follows:

Happy New Year To You

Happy New Year to you!
May every great new day
Bring you sweet surprises--
A happiness buffet.

Happy New Year to you,
And when the new year’s done,
May the next year be even better,
Full of pleasure, joy and fun.

New Year’s Reflections

Looking back on the months gone by,
As a new year starts and an old one ends,
We contemplate what brought us joy,
And we think of our loved ones and our friends.

Recalling all the happy times,
Remembering how they enriched our lives
We reflect upon who really counts,
As the fresh and bright new year arrives.

And when I/we ponder those who do,
I/we immediately think of you.

Thanks for being one of the reasons I'll/We'll have a Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Wish

My Happy New Year wish for you
Is for your best year yet,
A year where life is peaceful,
And what you want, you get.

A year in which you cherish
The past year’s memories,
And live your life each new day
Full of bright expectancies.

I wish for you a holiday
With happiness galore;
And when it’s done, I wish you
Happy New Year, and many more.

New Year’s Reality Check

Another year, another chance
To start our lives anew;
This time we’ll leap old barriers
To have a real breakthrough.

We’ll take one little step
And then we’ll take one more,
Our unlimited potential
We’ll totally explore.

We’ll show off all our talents
Everyone will be inspired;
(Hmm…while I’m writing this,
I’m getting very tired.)

We’ll give up all bad habits;
We’ll read and learn a lot,
All our goals will be accomplished,
Sigh...or maybe not.

Oh well, Happy New Year anyway!

New Year’s Resolutions

Each year I resolve with the strongest intent
To be better this year than the last.
And I work very hard; the rules hardly get bent,
But this discipline gets old so fast!

But with this new year I just know I’ll win out,
Just watch how I do and you’ll see!
I’m not going to have yet another blowout;
I’ll be good as I know I can be.

But, if wicked things beckon, and I’m not so strong,
If I weaken and fall on my act,
I’ll be thankful again that you’ll help me along
As you have during all new years past.

I’m so grateful that you’re my (title)! Happy New Year!

In The New Year

In the New Year,
we wish you the best year you’ve ever had,
and that each New Year
will be better than the last.
May you realize your fondest dreams
and take time to recognize and enjoy
each and every blessing.

Happy New Year,
And many more!

People Like You

A brand new year!
A clean slate on which to write
our hopes and dreams.
This year:
Less time and energy on things;
More time and energy on people.
All of life’s best rewards,
deepest and finest feelings,
greatest satisfactions,
Come from people--
People like you.

Happy New Year!

Pieces of Time

New years come and new years go,
Pieces of time all in a row.
As we live our life, each second and minute,
We know we’re privileged to have you in it.
Our appreciation never ends
For our greatest blessings: our family and friends.

Happy New Year!

New Year’s Eve Party Invitation

The New Year’s rolling in;
We’re planning quite a bash.
We need to have you here.
So it will be a smash!

We really want to see you;
We hope that you can make it.
So help us make our party fun,
Or we might have to fake it!

Just bring your awesome self (or "selves")
And what you want to drink.
And we’ll provide the other stuff,
Including the kitchen sink!

When you let us know you’ll come,
We’ll smile and shout "Whoopee!"
So sit right down and phone us
With your R.S.V.P!

The New Year’s Eve Party

The new year is coming; the party is near.
I’m sure looking forward to lots of good cheer.
I’ll be all dressed up in my snazziest best,
So I won’t disappear in the crowd like the rest.

I rap on the door and it opens to screams;
There are several guys hanging from high ceiling beams.
The guy in the lampshade looks ready to go,
As the girl on his shoulders shouts, "Giddy up Joe!"

I walk right on in to be one of the throng,
And they yell out my name while they bang a brass gong.
We laugh and we frolic, we dance and we sing,
(Is that my grandmother out there on the swing?)

This party is great, and the New Year looks bright.
Well, that’s how I dreamed it, while sleeping last night.
I’m thinking about you and wish you were here,
So I’m sending this poem to say Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Song

Happy New Year, Happy New Year,
Family, friends and colleagues, too.
May this new year be your best yet,
Happiness the whole year through.

Let’s all join to lift our glasses
In a toast to everyone.
To the old year now behind us,
To the new year, just begun.

(Repeat first verse)

The Gift of a New Year

Here’s to the year
that’s almost past its expiration date—2008.
We all had some surprises, didn’t we?
Some good, some distressing.
Let’s use everything we got from our experiences,
everything we learned,
to enrich the new year.

Here’s to the new year, 2009,
a gift we haven’t opened yet.
May its bright, shiny package
contain even more than we hope for.

And even while we’re delighting in new treasures,
let’s appreciate fully what we already have—
the blessings we take for granted.
Make a list, and check it twice.

And here’s to all you wonderful people
(wave glass around to encompass the whole group)
who are putting up with my toast;
I hope in the new year
you see yourselves the way I see you:
intelligent, interesting, and likable.

(Raise glass) To 2009:
May it give a whole new meaning
to the phrase, "the good life."

Fulfillment in the New Year

Here’s to the outgoing year, 2008:
May the good times live on in our memories,
and may we learn lessons from the troubling times
that will make us stronger and better than ever.

Here’s to 2009:
For each and every one of you,
may it be filled with significant steps
toward the fulfillment of your fondest wishes.

In this coming new year,
let us focus on our goals and work toward our dreams,
and yet (smile)
let’s all try to go with the flow a little more
and stress a little less.

And most important,
(wave glass around to encompass the whole group)
here’s to all of you.
Appreciate yourselves and each other in the new year
as I appreciate all of you now.
Let’s focus on each other’s good points
and choose to overlook minor annoyances
to create mutual happiness and contentment in 2009.

Here’s to 2009 (raise glass): Enjoy the journey!

New Year’s Toast

Here’s to the new year...
May it bring more joy and success
And less grief and regret.

To our dreams...
May we never stop believing in them
And taking the actions that will make them a reality.

To our friends, loved ones, associates (or colleagues)...
May we take the time to let them know
How much it means to us
To have them in our lives.

Let us encourage more and criticize less,
Give more and need less.
And whenever we can,
Let us create harmony and peace.

To new beginnings...
Let us start fresh, right now,
To make this the very best year ever.

A very Happy New Year to all of us!

Christian New Year’s Resolutions

How can I use the New Year
To better serve my Lord?
I’ll read my Bible every day,
And be more in accord.

I’ll find new ways to serve others;
I’ll love my neighbor, too.
I’ll focus on "give" instead of "get"
In everything I do.

I’ll forgive the people I’m mad at;
Angry feelings I’ll discard;
I’ll try to love my enemies,
Even though it’s hard.

In the new year, I’ll lift people up,
Instead of putting them down.
I’ll fill my heart with love and joy,
And never wear a frown.

I’ll let go of my worries;
I’ll put it all in His hands;
I’ll repent and try to sin less,
And obey all His commands.

These new year’s resolutions
Are difficult, at best,
But there’s something I can do each day
That will put my soul at rest:

I’ll love my Lord with all my heart,
With all my mind and soul,
And if I do that essential thing,
All the rest will be in control.

New Years Prayer

Dear Lord,
In the new year, we pray
that You will guide us each new day
in paths that are pleasing to You.
Lord, the new year gives us another chance
to rededicate our lives to You,
to study Your Word
so that we know right from wrong
and to act in accordance with Your commands.
Thank you for the sense of
direction, purpose and peace we get
from aligning our lives with Your Holy will.
We pray for the strength and the will to obey You
each and every day of the new year,
and when we fail, we pray for Your mercy,
Your compassion, Your grace and Your love.
Help us in the new year to be your faithful servants.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

by - Hartley Coleridge

- New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. by - Hamilton Wright Mabie

- The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months! by - Edward Payson Powell

- But can one still make resolutions when one is over forty? I live according to twenty-year-old habits. by - Andre Gide

- I do think New Year's resolutions can't technically be expected to begin on New Year's Day, don't you? Since, because it's an extension of New Year's Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year's Day isn't a good idea as you can't eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second. by - Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones's Diary

- We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential. by - Ellen Goodman

- He who breaks a resolution is a weakling;
He who makes one is a fool.
by - F.M. Knowles

- The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. by - G.K. Chesterton

- I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the years. by - Henry Moore

- Time has no divisions to mark its passage; there is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols. by - Thomas Mann

- I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me. by - Anaïs Nin

- Why won't they let a year die without bringing in a new one on the instant, can't they use birth control on time? I want an interregnum. The stupid years patter on with unrelenting feet, never stopping - rising to little monotonous peaks in our imaginations at festivals like New Year's and Easter and Christmas - But, goodness, why need they do it? by - John Dos Passos, 1917

- New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions. by - Mark Twain

- Every man regards his own life as the New Year's Eve of time. by - Jean Paul Richter

Christmas Games and Activities

Christmas Games and Activities
Christmas Games and Activities

The Christmas Games and Activities from the ESL KidStuff's.

Candy Cane Hockey
Make 2 goals on a table (using jellybeans as goal posts). Take another jellybean and use candy canes to shoot it into the goals (TP: V: candy cane, shoot, goal, win, lose, winner, loser, jellybean. F: giving instructions to play a game).

Candy Cane Horseshoes
This game is similar to the throwing horseshoes game. Put up a pole/stick/cone in the classroom. Students take turns throwing candy canes at it. The object of the game is to get your candy cane closest, and only throwing underarm. Extra points for getting the hook around the pole. The winner's prize? To eat all the candy canes! (TP: V: candy cane, throws, underarm, points, and prize).

Candy Cane Pass (Relay Race)
Supplies: 4 candy canes per team (have a few extras due to breakage). How To Play: The first player holds 4 candy canes between his/her fingers and passes them down the line, teammate to teammate, without dropping any.

Christmas Cards
Supplies: card, colored pens/pencils, glitter. Ss make cards for other Ss in the class.

Christmas Stocking Relay
Supplies: one stocking for each team, one spoon for each team, one bowl for each team, some wrapped candy. How To Play: Divide Ss into teams. Have each team line up at one end of the room. At the other end, hang a Christmas stocking for each team. Place a bowl of candy and a spoon in front of each team. Each S takes a turn carrying a candy from the bowl with the spoon across the room to the stocking. They drop the candy in the stocking and race back to the next person in line and give them the spoon. First team to fill the stocking wins! (TP: V: stocking, candy, spoon, and bowl. AA: Before the game you can get the sets to decorate their stockings with stars, bells, glitter, etc.).

Christmas Tree Decorate
Cut out a large tree shape (a triangle with rounded corners) from poster board and pin to a wall in the classroom. Ss create decorations, ornaments and wrapped presents from craft paper, and then glue them to the tree. (TP: V: decorations (star, bells, etc.), cut, And glue).

Supplies: Christmas music (see bottom of this page). How To Play: Begin playing music, everyone moves and dances until the music stops then they must "freeze" in whatever position they happen to be in.

Based on the classic beach game of "limbo". Try using a string of twinkle lights, or a strand of sparkly garland for your limbo stick. For a fun variation on the game, make it a little more challenging by adding a Santa Stomach to each student as they take their turn. Have a couple of oversized shirts and some fluffy pillows on hand.

Pass the Christmas Ornament
Supplies: one straw for each child / ornaments cut out of tissue paper (tree, bell, star, etc.). How To Play: Divide the class into 2 teams and line up each team. Sts pass the ornaments down the line, teammate to teammate, by inhaling and exhaling on the straw to hang onto or release the ornament. No hands! The first team to successfully pass the ornaments up and down the line wins! (TP: V: ornament, decoration, tree, bell, star, line up, pass. AA: Before the game you can get the students to make the tissue ornaments).

Pin The Nose on Rudolph
This is a take on 'pin the tail on the donkey'. Put a picture of a nose-less Rudolf on the wall, blindfold the students, spin them around and see if they can pin a red nose in the right place. The nearest wins prize/points. Click here for a color Rudolph poster or click here for a black white Rudolph poster. (TP: V: Rudolph, reindeer, nose, pin, blindfold, spin. F: parts of the body. AA: Song 'Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer', 'Rudolph Dash' game).

Rudolph Dash
Supplies: Circles cut out of red construction paper, Vaseline. How To Play: Using Vaseline has each S put a red circle on their nose. In teams, relay race to the finish with each new person adding their red nose. If the nose falls off the S must go back to the bowl and add more Vaseline to reapply their nose. (TP: V: circle, red, nose, run, stick. F: shapes, colors, parts of the body. AA: Song 'Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer', 'Pin the Nose on Rudolph' game).

Santa Says
Same as 'Simon Says': The S up is "Santa". S says "Santa says hop". All Ss hop. S says "Stop". Ss should continue hopping on until "Santa" says "Santa says stop". Repeat for other actions such as jump, run, turn around, sit down, stand up, hands up/down, star jump, etc.

Scramble Christmas Words
Supplies: index cards, paper bags. How To Play: Choose a Christmas word such as: Christmas, Candy Cane, Santa Claus, and Reindeer.... Write each letter of a word on individual index cards. Put the set in a paper bag. Divide the Ss into teams. Give each team a bag. The first team to decipher what the word in the bag wins. A variation of the game would be to divide into teams with the same number of Ss as there are letters in the word. Each S gets a letter and the team must arrange themselves in the right order to spell the word

Secret Santa Gift Exchange
Set this up 2-3 weeks before the class party. Write each person's name on a slip of paper, and then have students draw a name from a hat. They can't get their own name. Students must buy a present for the person whose name they chose, but set a (low) price limit. Students bring the wrapped present, with the recipients name on it, to the party (have a few extra presents on hand if anyone forgets, or in case of other emergencies so everyone can get one). The teacher (or Santa!) draws the names from a hat, and the recipient has to guess who gave them the present.

Snowball Frosty the Snowman
Draw a snowman on the board with target points (e.g. 10 pts head, 5 pts stomach, etc.). Make wet balls of using tissue. Sts throw the wet 'snowballs' which stick to the snowman (who also slowly melts!). Ask quos for points. (TP: V: snowman, snowballs, throws points. F: 'why' / 'yes, no' questions. AA: Song 'Frosty the Snowman', 'Rudolph Dash' game).

Fold a piece of paper until it is quite small. Then cut small holes in the folded paper. Open up - a snowflake! (TP: V: Snowflake, paper, fold, cut. F: weather).

Spelling Banner
Prepare two banners that say whatever you want them to say, i.e. Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings, etc. Also prepare a set of letters for the same words cut out in two different colors hidden randomly around the room. Divide the class into 2 teams with two captains--the captains sit and wait for their teammates to bring the letters for their banner. If a student is on the "red" team and sees a letter for the "green" team he/she just leaves it alone. The first team to cover their banner letters wins.

Who am I Santa?
Blindfold one student. The other Ss stand in circle around the blindfolded student. Spin the student around and then stop him/her facing another student. S says "Ho ho ho. Who am I?” The blindfolded S must guess who that student is and call out his/her name. (TP: F: asking people to identify themselves).

Word Find
Supplies: timer, paper, pens. Divide Ss into teams. Take a Christmas related word such as: Christmas, candy cane, Santa Claus, etc. and find as many words as possible using the letters of that word. Give a time limit (e.g. 2 mines). The team with the most words wins! Example: Christmas 1: (sit, is, his, miss, rat, tar, this, math, chair, rim...), Example 2: Candy cane (candy, cane, and, dance, day, nay, can, dye, an, any...)
